Introduction: 民國六十三年勞工安全衛生法公佈實施;國內工廠安全進入劃時代的轉淚點,校長王昭雄博士深感勞工問題在未來台灣工業發展中將扮演重要角色,急需培育工業安全衛生專業人才,乃於民國六十五年八月創立全國首創之工業安全衛生科,聘請由何先聰教授為首任科主任掌理科務,招收一班五年制日間部學生。民國七十二年奉准增設二年制專科夜間部,民國七十七年奉准增設二年制專科日間部。
民國八十五年因辦學績效卓越,經教育部核准改制為「嘉南藥理學院」,本系亦隨即更名工業安全衛生系(附設專科部),並於日間部與進修部招收大學部二年制技術系學生各兩班。民國八十七年五專部停招,次年日夜二專部停招並增設四年制技術學系招收日間部與進修部四技生。
民國八十九年本校改名為「嘉南藥理科技大學」,九十一年本系最後一屆五專畢業,至今日間部及進修部僅招收二技及四技生。本系為因應各行各業對安全衛生管理之需要,九十二年八月更名為『職業安全衛生系』。配合學校中長程規劃,民國九十三年八月起本系與環境工程科學系、環境資源管理系等三系從藥理學院分割出來規併為環境學院。
本系成立迄今已有二十九年,日間部大學部二技共有七屆之畢業生,四技有三屆之畢業生,專科五專部一共有二十三屆之畢業生、二專部則亦有十一屆之畢業生; 進修部二技有五屆之畢業生,四技有二屆之畢業生,二專部則有二十一屆之畢業生,是全國安全衛生領域擁有最多校友的系科。
早期科辦公室在C棟舊教學大樓一樓,民國七十八年遷入新建之R棟大樓一至三樓,後隨著系務發展需要,學校興建工安大樓並於民國八十五年遷入至今,近三十年來在校方全力支援、歷任系主任之規劃及全系師生之共同努力下持續不斷發展,系務蒸蒸日上,瞻望願景!本系將秉持教育目標,全力培育安全衛生管理專業人才,以提昇國內學校及產業界之安全衛生水準。
