摘要: As English has assumed the leading places in many facets of modern life, the learning of English language arts has became a necessity in Taiwan.Although the teaching of English has been a growing industry, its concept towards language teaching/learning stills remains immature. While in the United States, people begin to realize the importance of immigrant children's primary languages and cultures as well as the existence of children's emergent literacy, people inTaiwan, especially some educators in higher education institutions and preschools, accentuate the“English-only”environment neglecting children's potential emergent literacy. In Taiwan,English is not used in general by the society and by the school system. Emergent literacy helps young learners to became independent and continuous learners; reading aloud serves the tools for granting children opportunities to require specific abilities for reading and writing which come from immediate experiences with oral and written language and with social interactions. Emergent literacy may provide another perspectives to examine English learning and bilingualism to preschool children in Taiwan.
