The Relationship between Exercise Habit in Teenager and Health-related Physical Fitness of Adult
ObjectiveFew studies have been made on the effects of exercise habits in youth on physical fitness when reaching adulthood. The main objective of this study is to examine whether adolescent exercise habits will influence adult exercise habits and eventually affect their health in the future. MethodThis study utilizes the questions in the survey made by the Sports Affairs Council of Executive Yuan. The items used were tested within confidence interval through structural questionnaire. The questionnaire designed for inquiry of youth and adult exercise habits was based on the guidelines recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Data of 413 people under training from 25 to 65 years old were collected by recalling past exercise habit back in high school and present exercise habit using retrospective method. Six-minute (fast) walk is used to determine cardiopulmonary function. The parameters used to measure muscle power were sit-ups in 30 seconds for muscle strength and sit-ups in 60 seconds for muscle endurance. Flexibility is tested by bending forward at the hip with legs straight while standing on a box and the distance of the fingertips above or over the toe level is measured. Blood is drawn for serum cholesterol level to serve as indicator for body composition. The software SPSS 23.0 was used for statistical analysis. Frequency by number and percentage is used to record categorical variables from parameters of basic profile.Pearson's chi-squared test was employed to show exercise habit differences between adolescents and adults. Same method was used to show the correlation between adult exercise habit and physical fitness. In all statistical analysis, p < 0.05 was set as the standard level considered to be statistically significant.ResultsAdolescent exercise habit is positively associated with adult exercise habit (p<0.001). A significant difference in frequency, duration, intensity, and total body exercise is noted with the adolescents surpassing adults (p<0.01). ConclusionExercise habits formed in adolescents have a positive correlation to that in adults. Moreover, adults with exercise habits have better physical fitness than those who do not exercise regularly. Therefore developing good exercise habits in children and adolescents is strongly recommended which will induce exercise habits in adults and in the long run will have a positive impact to adult physical fitness.
