Smartphones have developed rapidly in recent years and become more and more important on global tourism market. Travel apps have been released one after another in travel and local information category of Taiwan Google Play store. Japanese tourists play a significant role in the most visited foreign countries, but there are few travel applications about Taiwan in Google Play store for Japan. The TardiHill has a special World War II military background and geological features. As its abundant value in military tourism, it is worth promoting in the tourism market.
The main purpose of this study is to do a field research to collect tourism information of TardiHill, and translates the information into Japanese to develop the TardiHill navigator application. This study adopts a hybrid application development approach based on web technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. With an integration of jQuery mobile, Leaflet and OpenStreetMap to offer LBS technology. In addition, through the use of the command-line interface Apache Cordova to compile the source code into a native file format.
This study has successfully developed the TardiHill navigator application. The application runs very smoothly and it is neck to neck in speed with a native application. TardiHill navigator application collected 20 local tourist attractions, 2 parking area information and 2 bus stop information. The application contains 24 sites with illustrated descriptions.
It is rumored that Japanese troops constructed trenches at TardiHill. In the process of the fieldwork, we confirm that trenches exist. To understand its current status, it is worth doing more further investigation.
