Lipids including fats, oils and greases (FOG) in wastewater are poorly removable by sewage treatment systems. The purpose of this study is to screen the microorganisms with high lipid-degrading ability and combine the electrocoagulation method to solve the problem of lipids in wastewater. Sixteen strains of bacteria were isolated from lipid-containing wastewater in the sewage treatment system of a plaza restaurant to test the ability of lipid degradation. The isolated strains A2, C1, C4 and D2 showed high ability to degrade Tween-80, -60, -40 and -20. C4 and D2 strains showed the ability to decompose cream, lard and cooking oil, however, A2 and C1 strains had no decomposition effect on these lipids. A3, B1 and C3 strains, which exhibited better decomposition ability for butter, lard and cooking oil, had no decomposition effect on the emulsifier Tweens. C4 and D2 strains were selected and showed the ability to degrade lipids separated from the wastewater using the electrocoagulation system. The results showed that the strains C4 and D2 have the potential to decompose the emulsifier and the three types of lipids in wastewater.d. This study combines a electrocoagulation equipment with lipid-degrading microorganisms to provide an effective and environmentally friendly method to treat lipid-containing wastewater, which may help to solve the problem of lipids in the sewage treatment system..
