AbstractAmong the global tourists who visited Taiwan, those from Japan represent the second largest group (after China) and are higher in number than all other non-Chinese speaking countries. When measured in proportion to the country’s total population, approximately 1.6 millions out of 120 millions of Japanese people have visited Taiwan, equivalent to one out of about 74, which is much higher than Chinese tourists (approximately 4.18 millions out of 1.35 billions, or one out of 322). The reason for this popularity could be partly explained by the close geographic proximity. Additionally, the tight link in history and culture included the development of hot springs by the government and private sector since the Japanese rule of Taiwan (A.D. 1895-1945), which also promoted the tourism. The Guanziling hot spring area in Tainan has a long history and maintained the footprints left by the Japanese developers, thus is very attractive to those Japanese tourists who like the history and humanity of Taiwan. Although it is located in mountain areas and inconvenient to reach, Japanese tourist usually could arrive by bus without help. However, without Japanese-speaking guides who are familiar with the local history, the visit could be short and superficial. Additionally, the poor signal of mobile network in some of the mountain areas further limited the feasibility of obtaining tourism information through Internet. To address this issue, this work utilized the calibre-E-book management system to produce an electronic tour guide of the area that could be downloaded for offline use. This 99-page guide included the history of the Guanziling hot spring area, the hot spring water characteristics, the hot spring usage and lodging information, famous local food, nine major attractions, and traffic information. By providing this high quality and convenient Japanese e-guide, this work expects to further promote the interest of Japanese tourists to visit Taiwan and the Guanziling hot spring area. |
