This study is inspired by film "Island Etude" which talks about how the people’s life have changed after finished cycling around Taiwan. By this inspiration, the author intents to explore and understand the two hikers’ motivations, travel considerations, coping strategies and experience, and study their life have changed after traveled on foot around Taiwan.

In this study, the author takes two workers who have traveled on foot around Taiwan as an example. Their age are between 30-55 years old, with this particular experience more than one time. The methods of the study use semi-structured with in-depth interview as a means of collecting data, and which supplements by comparative research for deducing the study results. The interview focuses on three parts: pre-travel, during-travel, and post-travel that relates to their motivations, and difficulties of the traveling, and changing in their work, life and values. The data will be collected from 2015 to 2017.

Through the qualitative study and using the theory of transformation, the results show that the motivations of traveling on foot around Taiwan can be summarized as follows: (1) escaping from the normal life’s track (2) pursuing adventure (3) experiencing freedom and uniqueness (4) self-actualization. During the traveling the strategies and embodiment can be summarized as: (1) accompanying with "both expectation and fear" on the road (2) removing self-defense mechanism (3) uncertainty journey and change feelings. After studying the hikers, the author finds that their life and values are changed. Before traveling, the works have to face constrains of daily life and their restrict development life background. However, after having traveled on foot around Taiwan, they have learned how to deal with their own affairs, no longer to confine in the work, family, social values, and thus gradually transform themselves into a person who is able to self-learning and re-definition his life .
