Angelica acutiloba belongs to the Apiaceae family, which is a perennial herbaceous plant. “Taiwan Angelica acutiloba”,was introduced from Japan. Only few studies have been published on biological activities of essential oil from Angelica acutiloba, therefore ,in our study, we compared the compositions of essential oils between Angelica acutiloba and commercial Angelica sinensis, and their antibacterial,anti-inflammatory , antioxidative, and whitening activities. In this study, we adopted steam-distillation method to extract the essential oil from Taiwan Angelica acutiloba. We used gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to analyze the components. The yield of essential oil from Angelica acutiloba was 4.89%. The primary components of the essential oil obtained by steam-distillation were 3-n-butylphthalide (42.87%),γ-Terpinene (24.83%) and β-caryophyllene (8.98%). The primary components of the essential oil from Angelica sinensis were ethyl linoleate (30.07%),ethyl oleate (23.43%)and ligustilide (17.80%). In the anti-inflammatory test, the essential oil of Angelica sinensis showed better NO redical scavenging and 5-LOX inhibition than Angelica acutiloba. Both were better P. acnes lipase inhibition than α-bisabolol. In the antioxidant test, α-tocopherol was superior in removing DPPH free radicals to Angelica sinensis and Angelica acutiloba. However the essential oil of Angelica sinensis showed better β-carotene inhibition than Angelica acutiloba. In the whitening activity test, both were better tyrosinase inhibition than L-ascorbicacid. In the antibacterial test, Angelica sinensis had better effects on E. coli than Angelica acutiloba, but on S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and P. acnes Angelica acutiloba showed stronger antibacterial than Angelica sinensis.
