This study intends to evaluate the relationship among nursery workers’ concept, awareness of facility effectiveness, and self-efficacy on fire safety and evacuation. The 406 subjects were from 23 privatized public nurseries founded over a year in New Taipei City, including supervisors, childcare providers, administrative personnel, nursing staff, and chefs. The self-edited structured questionnaire was modified through evaluating the expert validity and executing the pretest. The collected data was processed with SPSS 20.0 to present descriptive, difference and regression analyses. Measured with Cronbach’s alpha, the value of the reliability coefficients for each section of the questionnaire was between 0.8 – 0.9. The findings from the study reveal the following. First, the significant differences exist among the three variables about fire safety and evacuation, i.e., the nursery workers’ concept, awareness of facility effectiveness, and self-efficacy. Both the concept and the awareness of facility effectiveness can predict the self-efficacy on fire safety and evacuation. Second, the stronger evacuation concept the workers have, the poorer they are in self-concept of ability. This fact suggests a further discussion. Third, the workers have low efficacy for vertical escape chutes and escape slings. On the other hand, they tend to have higher efficacy for evacuation beds and young survivor rescue garments, which are considered informal evacuation equipment. Accordingly, it is suggested that the government reexamine and plan the evacuation equipment, evacuation models and the course content of safety education in order to meet the current needs. |
