Plant Essential oils be provided with a special fragrance. The literature indicated that the mint had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.Spearmint, austrian mint, lime mint are perennial herbaceous plants, which are suitable for growth in Taiwan and other sub-tropical regions. Furthermore, they adapt to the climate in Taiwan, and with high heat-resistant in summer. Because their fragrances are mild, they are used wildly as flavors, fragrances, foods, and cosmetics. This study intends to analyze and compare the ingredients of spearmint, austrian mint, and lime mint essential oils and to evaluate their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial activities.Firstly, we extracted the mint essential oils by steam distillation extraction, then analyze the composition by gaschromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS).
The results showed that the components of spearmint oil is D(+)-Carvone (52.0%)、D-Limonene (17.2%)、Dihydrocarvone (4.9%).
The components of austrian mint essential oil are D(+)-Carvone(47.3%)、β-Caryophyllene (7.1%)、D-Limonene (4.6%).Ketones have the highest concentrations for both of them. The main component of lime mint essential oil are D-Limonene (41.0%)、D(+)-Carvone (8.5 %)、δ-Selinene (6.7 %).
Terpenes have the highest concentrations for lime mint.Although their main compositions are similar, but indeedly there are difference in the proporation of ingredients.
In the anti-bacterial evaluation, the anti-bacterial effects of spearmint against E. coli ,S. aureus ,P. aeruginosa ,C. albicans ,P. acnes and P. ovale are better than austrian mint and lime mint. The anti-oxidative activity assessment shows that the austrian mint essential oil is the best one in DPPH scavenging radical activity, in β-Carovtene-linoleic acid assay, and better than the spearmint and lime mint. However, the lime mint is better than austrian mint and spearmint in NO scavenging radical activity and anti-inflammatory .
