The incidence and mortality rates of colon cancer have increased in recent years with increased incidence rates among younger population. But, the colon cancer screening rates are still low in Taiwan. In order to increase colorectal cancer screening, this research studies factors such as media exposure and reception of health information that influence the behaviors of aged 20 to 60 years-old individuals on colorectal cancer screening. Methods: Questionnaires were given to participants aged 20 to 60 years old. 451 participants were recruited from the department stores, train stations, office buildings in Kaohsiung City and County. Of the 451 participants, 383 subjects who have returned and completed the questionnaire were included in this study. The contents of questionnaire included demographic information, colorectal cancer screening, media channels, and sources of health information. Data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 Chinese edited statistical software. Results: Of the 383 subjects, 41 (10.7%) subjects have been screened for colorectal cancer. Factors related to the participation of colorectal cancer screening are subject’s occupation, previous information on colon cancer screening, and knowledge on the incidence and mortality rates of colon cancer. To gather health information, subject’s age, educational level, and occupation determine the type of media he or she would have received. About one tenth (10.2%) subjects refused to receive text messages pertaining to colon cancer screening from the mobile phone. Conclusions: Previous knowledge on health information regarding to colon cancer is related to the outcome and behavior of colon cancer screening. With low colon cancer screening rates, it is important to reach people with different age groups from the media that they prefer. In this study, most of the subjects prefer to receive health information by text messages of mobile phone.
