    Abstract: 《莊子》云:「寓言十九,藉外論之。」寓,寄也。(《說文解字》、《方言》)。又藉「勝」義或轉訓為增。寓言者,假設人物、事實,彼此問對,以證就事理也。說者有所寄託,「意在此而言於彼。」(王先謙《集解》)。其方法本於譬喻而大之,其體製屬象徵,其效果則宜於言理發微。寄寓於事實,寄寓於言語,皆稱寓言,而《別錄》釋寓言云:「寄辭於其人」,本專指其對話而言。戰國辭賦之作,「其文稱小,而其旨極大。舉類邇而見義遠。」(《史記‧屈原傳》)指其象徵之法,奏風喻之功也。又言辭賦「假像盡辭」(《文章流別志論》),言辭賦善於虛設情境,鋪敘文字也。蓋就訓詁言之,賦訓鋪也、藏也。藉其言語、事跡以風喻,故日藏:辭有所揚肆,事有所虛設,故日鋪。辭賦之體,將有所風喻,則必先虛設其事;次虛設其事,必揚肆其辭,故日:賦以風喻為用,以假設為體,以韻誦為句(或散韻兼之),以鋪張為辭。本文舉其風喻之類型,大約之為十種,則所謂賦之性質可知矣。而賦之體裁可稱之為「廣義之寓言」。哲理寓言多以闡釋理念為目的;辭賦之有假設寄託,與寓言同。至於辭賦以抒憤或風諫為內容,又兼顧諷誦,此所以異於哲理寓言者。總之,辭賦之作,不倚聲樂,自造偉辭,為吾國文學獨立之嚆矢;尤能以象畿之理、寓言之法,發揚古詩人風喻之旨,於抒情、論事、寫物,無施不宜,終為文章之淵藪。
