A HPLC method was developed to separate racemic mixtures of chlorinated cinnamic acids in this study. The cis-isomers obtained by this method were confirmed and characterized by using GC-mass,and one dimensional proton NMR. It was found the reslting data from mass pattern, and the J(coupling constant) for the differences between cis-and trans-chlorinated cinnamic acids can be used as an additional and important index for distinguishing the cis-isomers from the trans-isomers. The obtained cis-isomers by the HPLC method are in the pure acld form. When compared with the cis-isomers (sodium salt) obtained by the ion-exchange chromatography method, the present HPLC method Is proved to be simpler, better, and much more precise.
