Abstract: In this study, adsorption of Cu2+ ions onto chitosan-coated clay (bentonite and kaolinite) was investigated. The experiment was carried out through batch adsorption studies under evaluation of several parameters. Experimental results indicated that Cu2+ removal percentage and its adsorption capacity were significantly increased by chitosan-coated clay compared to those adsorbents used along. The equilibrium adsorption data were analyzed using Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm model. The best model that fitted very well was Langmuir isotherm model with correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.99. The maximum adsorption capacities calculated from Langmuir adsorption isotherm were obtained 12.15 mg/g, 12.69 mg/g and 16.78 mg/g for 1:20, l:10 and l:5 chitosan-coated bentonite ratios, and 6.88 mg/g , 9.36 mg/g, and 11.24 mg/g for chitosan-coated kaolinite ratios, respectively. The kinetic data was tested using pseudo first-order and pseudo-second order reaction. The kinetic experimental data followed pseudo-second order reaction which indicated that the chemical sorption was rate-limiting step.
