Morinda citrifolia L. (Rubiaceae), commonly known as noni, is used in the Hawaiian and Tahitian islands, and has antitumor and antioxidant activities. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the crude extracts of M. citrifolia inhibit the lytic cycle of Epstein-Barr virus and the possible relation among antiviral activities, total phenolic contents, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhyrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging capacity. We found that the ethanolic extract from leaves of M. citrifolia had the highest Total phenolic contents and DPPH radical-scavenging activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts. Meanwhile, results demonstrated that 200 g/mL of this ethanolic extract effectively inhibited the expression of Epstein-Barr virus lytic proteins during the viral lytic cycle, thus showing that the phenolic extract may have antioxidant and antiviral effects. Furthermore, this extract was not toxic toward P3HR1 cells. Thus, it can potentially be developed as an anti-EBV drug.
