Metabolic syndrome patients require health management such as diet control and exercises in their daily lives. However, it is difficult for busy medical staffs to perform proper health management by themselves. The spinning exercise intervention in workplaces can effectively help employees to establish exercise and diet habits for improving personal health and creating a win-win situation for employees and organizations. The purpose of this study is to explore whether there is a significant improvement in the physical fitness and blood biochemical values of medical staffs with metabolic syndrome after the intervention of a spinning exercise program.
Hospital staffs with metabolic syndromes in a medical center were research subjects and an interventional spinning exercise program including diet consultation was practiced. The design of before and after comparison was used in this study. Physical fitness tests, blood biochemical and physical examinations were investigated before and after the program. Collected data were analyzed and compared with nonparametric statistics methods. 30 medical staffs were involved in the study and all cases completed training, however, three cases due to personal physical conditions did not complete the physical fitness test after the program.
    Results showed that there were significant differences in physical fitness indexes except reaction time (p = 0.090). Body Mass Index (p < 0.001), skeletal muscle weight (p < 0.001), body fat percentage (p < 0.001), back strength (p < 0.05), grip strength (p < 0.001), bent-knee sit-up in one minute (p < 0.001), the sitting forward flexion (p < 0.001), 3-min step test (p < 0.01) were significantly improved after the intervention. In physical and biochemical indexes, waist (p < 0.01) and high-density lipoprotein (p < 0.05) were significantly improved.
The spinning exercise intervention helps staffs with metabolic syndromes in a medical center to improve their physical fitness and health conditions. A health promotion program like spinning exercise can involve diet consultations for nutrition control. Inter-departmental staffs can be recruited in the health promotion team to effectively promote health of employees with metabolic syndromes through communication, collaboration and integration. Results of this study can be considered as a reference for future employee health promotion programs.
