Environmental contaminants that can affect the endocrine system in animals, which controls important functions through communication of glands, hormones and cellular receptors, are known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Widespread exogenous EDCs in the environment are becoming a major growing concern in the field of ecology and environmental protection recently, especially in freshwater ecosystem. Therefore, assess damaging EDCs with freshwater ecosystem is one of the most significant studies of the subject. This project will extend the research project of 2012 year, proposes three-year research work to study the assess with EDCs in freshwater ecosystem by the physiological changes that the concentration of vitellogenin, testosterone, and estradiol in Macrobrachium sp. First-year’s work: aim at the effect of 17β-estradiol, nonylphenol and bisphenol A in Macrobrachium sp. Second year, we continue studying EDCs, chlordane、lindane and DDT affect with shrimp and what’s more proceeded to Net Cage to found indicator species of Macrobrachium sp. Third year, we catch shrimp from nine river, including Danshiuei river, Toucian river, Dajia river, Beigang river, Zengwang, Erren river, Donggang river, Siouguluan river and Beinan river in Taiwan to assess damage with EDCs in freshwater ecosystem. Hopefully, the results of this series research work will be useful as reference for managing and protecting freshwater ecosystem in the future.
