Abstract: This paper highlights the MBR performance of two industrial wastewaters. The pilot-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) (10 m3/day capacity) conducted with pharmaceutical wastewater showed a very high COD (more than 95%) and solids (more than 99%) removal. The MBR plant consisted of an aeration tank and a membrane bioreactor which was operated for a period of 140 days. A bench scale study was made to study the treatability of ABS industrial wastewater by an Aerated Submerged Membrane Bioreactor (ASMBR). The results show that a hydraulic retention time of 18 hours leads to the highest biomass concentration, a maximum MLSS value of approximately 35 g/L. The cleaning requirement was minimum. Chemical membrane cleaning was only employed twice , after 131 and 180 days of operation in the total experimental period of 204 days. The results indicate that the MBR system has a great potential in treating these two types of wastewater with stable operation and satisfactory removal performance.
