The aim of this study was to explore the effect of different metal ions (such as Fe2+ and Cu2+) on the reduction of nitrate by nanoscale zero valent iron under various initial solution pH. Under the condition of initial solution pH=2, additional dosing of 1.0 mM Cu2+ could enhance the removal of nitrate more than Fe2+ did, which might be due to the generation of Cu+ or Cu0 reduced from Cu2+ on the surface of iron by Fe0. Cu+ or Cu0 could increase the reduction potential of Fe0.
